Water saving tips

Water is a valuable natural resource, which should be used as efficiently as possible. This way you save money and our surrounding environment. Some clever tips to save water in your home and garden follow below.

Kitchen

  • Turn off the tap when you wash dishes by hand. If you have a double bowl sink, use one bowl to wash and the other to rinse dishes.
  • Fill a jug with tap water and place it in your fridge. This way you don’t have to leave the tap running to get cold water.
  • Wash your fruits in a pan of water and use it to water the plants.
House
  • Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher.
  • Check your taps regularly for leaks and fix them as soon as possible. The best way for that is to monitor the water bills and water meters for higher consumption than usual.
  • Be careful to turn off the taps properly to avoid wasting water.
Bathroom and toilet

  • Prefer shower to a bath. A bath takes approx. 3 times more water.
  • Take shorter showers. Reducing your shower time by 1-2 minutes can save up to 12 litres a day!
  • Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth or hair, soap your hands or shave. This may help you save approx. 40 litres a day.
Garden
  • To reduce evaporation, water your garden early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
  • Use storaged rain water to water the plants.
  • To reduce evaporation, water the roots of the plants, not leaves.
  • Water your garden with a watering can rather than use an automatic irrigation system or sprinkler.
  • To avoid any problems with water pressure, please do not water your plants/garden during peak hours of water use (18:00 – 22:00).
