The whole water treatment process lasts for approximately 15 hours.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Raw water intake<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lakewater is pumped\u00a0into the plant.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mechanical treatment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Larger debris, algae and plankton are removed from the lakewater by using screens and microfilters.\u00a0The fish are also left behind the first screen, which stops them from\u00a0getting into the plant. The debris, algae and plankton removed from water are discharged into the sewer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chemical treatment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1.\u00a0Ozonation<br \/>\nOzone is a specific type of oxygen that improves water quality and colour, and gives it a better taste and odour. Furthermore, ozone kills microorganisms and bacteria that could harm humans. Ozone is not hazardous for humans.<\/p>\n<p>2. Coagulation &#8211; adding special water treatment chemical<br \/>\nCoagulant is a substance that concentrates around particles in water, making them larger and heavier. As a result, the flakes that have become heavier sink to the bottom of the basin and can be flushed into a sewer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"vpj\" class=\"ylemiste\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"icon-4\"><strong>Filtration<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means taking out tiny particles that remained in water after removing the flakes. For this purpose, dual-layered sand filters are used.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"icon-5\"><strong>Chlorination<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chlorine is a chemical that is safe for human health in small quantities and\u00a0helps to\u00a0maintain the water quality in the city network.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Drinking water which is treated from surface water needs to be disinfected before it is pumped into the public water network, for which purpose chlorine compounds are used. The concentration of free chlorine in water discharged from the water treatment plant shall be in the range of 0.2mg\/l\u20261 mg\/l (Ministry of Social Affairs Regulation No 61). Drinking water quality requirements are in accordance with EC drinking water directives and WHO (World Health Organisation) requirements. The aim is to ensure that the quality of drinking water is maintained throughout the supply system and that the water is safe to drink.<\/p>\n<div id=\"vpj\" class=\"ylemiste\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"icon-6\"><strong>Clean water<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the treated water basin drinking water is pumped into the network. Pumping stations are built around Tallinn so that the water would reach all the citizens.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bullets\">\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Did you know that &#8230;?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8230; almost <strong>90%<\/strong> of drinking water in Tallinn is produced from\u00a0<strong>surface water<\/strong>. <strong>10%<\/strong> of the consumers drink regional\u00a0<strong>groundwater<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; if only groundwater would be used for drinking water purposes, then\u00a0at today&#8217;s consumption\u00a0the existing resources would be used up in 30 years.<\/li>\n<li class=\"last\">&#8230; the main water source of Tallinners is Lake\u00a0\u00dclemiste. The <strong>total volume<\/strong> of the lake is\u00a0<strong>33 million m<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>but the volume used for\u00a0<strong>treatment<\/strong> is\u00a0ca <strong>17 million m<sup>3<\/sup><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; it would take <strong>9 months<\/strong> for the \u00dclemiste Water Treatment Plant to\u00a0treat all the\u00a0water in the lake.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230; the average amount of drinking water treated at the plant is\u00a0<strong>60 000 m<sup>3<\/sup> a day<\/strong>.
