Blockages might be a threat not only to the person causing it, but to\u00a0the entire apartment block or even a group of houses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I am the boss in my own toilet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the individual apartement owners are solely responsible for their toilets, they are jointly responsible for\u00a0the sewerage pipes of the entire apartment block as those wastewater pipes are in their joint ownership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Any blockage can be fixed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clearing blockages is hard work for the\u00a0people operating the wastewater network. It often takes a lot of time and resource to detect and clear sewer blockages, which could be avoided by not flushing unsuitable objects down the drain.<\/p>\n<p>However, we are unable to prevent all blockages, because sewerage system is a public asset that we all use. It is crucial to be proactive and do everything we can to prevent blockages. Everybody should avoid flushing even the smallest unsuitable objects, because those can form bigger clogs over time and cause a major blockage in the sewer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anything can be flushed down the toilet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be that a hygiene product or a soup &#8211; it can be flushed. No! Those things should be sorted and binned.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tVOVd-2tFtI\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5>What should never be flushed down the toilet?<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cotton buds<\/strong>\u00a0are not soluble in water, but break into cotton fibres and plastic sticks. Those in combination with fat contained in sewage can form big globs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sanitary towels<\/strong> are designed to absorb moisture and are not soluble in water. Sanitary towels expand and clog pipes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cotton pads<\/strong>\u00a0are made of cotton fibre and decompose in water.\u00a0The fibres gather together in bends of pipes and cause blockages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diapers<\/strong> are designed to absorb moisture and are not soluble in water. Diapers expand and cause a lot of damage in the sewers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tampons<\/strong>\u00a0are not soluble in water,\u00a0but expand instead. Tampons are one of the most frequent causes of blockages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastic bags<\/strong>\u00a0are a threat to the environment, because they don&#8217;t break down easily and last long in water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Candy papers<\/strong> when wet and flushed down the toilet build up easily and, combined with fat, can clog the pipes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Packages<\/strong>. Only few of the packages are biodegradable in water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastic objects<\/strong> last very long in water!\u00a0In\u00a0case of an\u00a0unfortunate coincidence, even\u00a0a plastic bottle cork may cause a blockage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hair<\/strong>.\u00a0Although a single hair seems safe to be flushed, lots of hair pose quite a threat for a blockage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Condoms <\/strong>cause many problems in sewers. Always throw used condoms into a bin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medicines<\/strong> are mostly soluble in water, but can\u00a0cause uncontrollable consequences by\u00a0toxic effects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bones<\/strong> take a long time to decompose in sewers and may get stuck in those.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food waste.<\/strong> Fat contained in food builds up on the pipe walls and can clog pipes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chewing gum<\/strong>\u00a0is not soluble in water and combining with fat, hair and other trash in wastewater may cause blockages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old chemicals<\/strong> may badly affect the pipes and build up on the pipe walls.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coffee grounds<\/strong> coagulate with grease and can block pipes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You should\u00a0not throw anything in the toilet other than toilet paper.
